MAEME — The Oversized Streetwear Canvas Tote

The Client Brief & Challenge

The MAEME design team came to Flying Whale seeking a signature oversized carryall for their seasonal apparel capsule. Their primary design friction was balancing casual drape with durability: conventional stiff canvas produced boxy, uncomfortable bag walls, while lighter fabrics collapsed entirely under the weight of laptops and daily essentials.

The Manufacturing & Fabric Solution

Our fabric development team developed a custom pre-washed 14oz pure cotton canvas. By pre-treating the raw yarns prior to cutting, we preserved the fabric’s dense tensile strength while imparting a soft, supple hand-feel that contours naturally to the body.

Structurally, we implemented an extended 12cm bottom gusset paired with reinforced cross-stitched (X-box) webbing handles. Internally, all raw fabric edges were enclosed in clean herringbone binding to prevent unraveling across years of daily use.

Craftsmanship Details

The brand’s bespoke typographic artwork was executed using breathable eco-friendly water-based screen print ink, ensuring zero plastic hand-feel on the fabric surface. An internal zippered drop pocket was integrated to secure passports, keys, and smartphones.
